Question: I have lived in Asheville for 23 years. I have worked in an office in Biltmore Village for the last several years. For as long as I can remember, I've strolled the streets, including the one called Kitchin Place, where Joseph A. Bank and White House/Black Market are located. Today on my walk, however, I noticed the street signs in the village have been changed, and with them Kitchin Place has now become Kitchen Place. Can you please tell me 1) What the origin of the name Kitchin was; and 2) Why the village has abandoned it and replaced the place name with a room for preparing food?

"Kitchin Place is the proper name of the street upon which (five different businesses) are located — it was historically spelled with an 'i' rather than an 'e' in the word 'Kitchin.'" wrote Bell, president of Kitchin Place LLC. "Moreover, each of these businesses has spent time and money in marketing their services using the historical spelling of the word."

"In our research we did discover a Mr. Kitchin who worked for the Biltmore Estate, which is most likely the origin for the street name," Hallingse said. "If members of the community would like to request the name of the street change to reflect the historical data, there is a process in place to formally request a street name change."

John Bell, whose family has been involved with several businesses in this part of Biltmore Village since 1963, sent the city a letter Feb. 21 in which he requested the street name be changed back to Kitchin Place.

"All city records indicate the street name is spelled Kitchen, including the official e911 record," said Christina Hallingse, a city of Asheville spokeswoman. "In January this street name sign was updated to reflect these records, a common practice. There are hundreds of street name signs that have mistakes on them, and those are constantly being updated and replaced with the correct street name."
